LAKE NATRON

Lake Natron is 50 kilometres in length and about 25 in width. It is a highly alkaline lake with pH of 9 to 10,5 that occupies a depression created by the Rift Valley. While Lake Natron is not deep, max 3 meters (ten feet), during drier seasons, the water evaporates, leaving behind minerals and salt, which is typical for this area of Africa. The Lake can become quite warm, reaching temperatures of 50° Celsius. The high water temperature and the high alkalinity do not support much life.

Natron is the usual nesting and vital environment area for millions of flamingos. Close to the lake you can take a refreshing dip in the natural pools formed by the nearby Engaro Sero waterfalls, offering respite from the desert heat.
